Flamed granite sealer, wet look HG-2 CTS Chemistry

A water-based siloxane and silane product for flamed granite that deepens the colour of the stone. Applied once, in a single heavier coat, whatever the absorbency of the substrate.

Surface

Natural stone

The surface the manufacturer intends this preparation for.

Natural stone

HG-2 is the flamed-granite version with a wet-look finish. On thermally worked stone the difference is marked: flaming lightens granite, and the product restores a saturation close to that of polished stone.

Application as for the colourless version - one heavier coat, applied once, about 1 mm, whatever the absorbency of the substrate. Out of use for 24 hours.

A multi-component product (siloxanes with modified silanes), water-based, alkali and UV resistant.

Stone forgives less than concrete. An acidic cleaner used on marble or travertine will etch the surface irreversibly, and excess sealer on a polish leaves a smear that can no longer be removed.

  1. Match the cleaner to the stone. Marble, travertine and limestone are sensitive to acids - for those, neutral or alkaline products are the right ones.
  2. Remove waxes, polishes and polymer coatings. A penetrating sealer will not get through a layer of wax.
  3. Dry the stone all the way through and check that no moisture is being drawn up through the joints.
  4. On polished surfaces have a clean, soft cloth ready to lift the excess - you have minutes, not hours.
  5. Ventilate: the range for polished stone is solvent-based.

After sealing polished stone, manufacturers require the surface to stay out of use, usually for 72 hours. The exact figure is under "Technical data".

Before sealing the whole area, test on a patch hidden by a planter or in a corner of the patio. The same product can read differently on two batches of the same material, and on a surface with old coating left on it, it will not bond at all.

What is the difference between -1 and -2?

Chemistry and finish. The -1 versions are single-component, siloxane-based and dry colourless. The -2 versions also contain modified silanes and deepen the colour for a wet-stone effect. Protection against water is the job of the product in both cases; what separates them is the finish.

Can I use a granite sealer on marble?

Do not assume so. Marble is soft and sensitive to acids, granite is not - the manufacturer states the stone in the product's intended use, and our categories follow that. Every product lists its recommended substrates in the technical data.

How do I clean stone once it has been sealed?

Manufacturers of the polished-stone range state a permitted pH range for cleaning products - usually pH 5-9 for the invisible versions and wider for the wet-look ones. The figure for each product is under "Technical data".

Will sealing stop the stone yellowing?

It limits the ingress of water and the compounds dissolved in it, including those that discolour stone from below. It will not stop processes inside the stone itself, or rust from fixings.

What exactly separates the -1 from the -2?

Composition and finish. The -1 versions are single-component, based on siloxanes alone, and dry colourless. The -2 versions are multi-component - siloxanes with modified silanes - and give a lasting wet-look finish. Both meet PN-EN 1504-2 tab. 3 and both leave the pores open.

How much product do I need?

The manufacturer of this range publishes no coverage in square metres per litre, because the product is applied to saturation and the absorbency of the material decides consumption entirely. The practical method: seal one square metre, measure what it took, and multiply by your area with some margin.

When is the surface rain resistant?

The manufacturer states 5-6 hours. During that time the freshly sealed surface also has to be kept out of direct sun.

The technical sheet and safety data sheet will be available after approval.

Coverage calculator

This product has no stated coverage yet, so we cannot work out the requirement.

The manufacturer publishes no coverage figure for this range. The sealer is applied to saturation in one heavier coat, repeated wet-on-wet on absorbent material.

The calculator starts once the manufacturer states the coverage.

Prepare the surface first

An impregnation will not bond to a surface with anything left on it. This is the most common cause of complaints.
