Natural stone sealers

Products for granite, marble, sandstone and travertine - invisible and wet look. The choice starts with how absorbent the stone is, not with what it is called.

This view contains only the products assigned to this surface.

Absorbency
Sandstone and travertine drink. Polished granite and marble take almost nothing and need different chemistry.
Finish
The **-1** versions are invisible. The **-2** versions deepen the colour - permanently, so a test before the full job is obligatory.
How to clean it after
Stone sensitive to acids has a permitted pH range for cleaning products.

For sealing, natural stone divides not by species but by absorbency. That is what decides which product will work at all.

  • Absorbent materials - sandstone, travertine, limestone, flamed granite. Siloxane products work here, applied to saturation.
  • Low-absorbency materials - polished granite, marble, porcelain. An ordinary sealer has no pores to enter; what is needed are high-penetration products applied in one coat and polished.

Why -1 and -2

Most ranges here come in pairs. The -1 version is single-component and colourless - the stone stays as it is. The -2 version also contains modified silanes and deepens the colour for a wet-stone effect. Protection against water is the job of the product in both; what separates them is the finish.

What not to do

Stone forgives less than concrete. An acidic cleaner used on marble, travertine or limestone will etch the surface irreversibly. Excess sealer on a polish leaves a smear that cannot be removed a few hours later. With polished stone, manufacturers require the surface to stay out of use, usually for 72 hours - the figure is on every product under "Technical data".

Questions before you choose

Can I use a granite sealer on marble?

Do not assume so. Marble is soft and sensitive to acids, granite is not. The manufacturer states the stone in the product's intended use and our categories follow it - the recommended substrates are in the technical data of every item.

What is the difference between -1 and -2?

Composition and finish. -1 is single-component, siloxane-based and colourless. -2 is multi-component - siloxanes with modified silanes - and gives a lasting wet-stone finish.

How do I clean stone after sealing?

Manufacturers of the polished-stone range state a permitted pH range for cleaning products - usually pH 5-9 for the invisible versions, wider for the wet-look ones. The figure for each product is under "Technical data".

Will sealing prevent wine and oil stains?

It limits the ingress of liquids, so a stain stays on the surface longer and can be wiped off. It is not an absolute barrier - the sooner you wipe, the better.
