Water-based sealer for low-porosity stone - ProtectGuard MG Eco

A solvent-free sealer for materials of low and very low porosity: granite, marble, porcelain and terrazzo. It limits the ingress of water, oils, grease and weak acids without forming a film. The manufacturer states food-contact approval.

Concrete and floors

Materials of low porosity - granite, marble, porcelain, terrazzo - will not take an ordinary sealer: there are no pores for it to enter. The MG range is formulated for exactly those.

The Eco version is water-based and solvent-free. The manufacturer describes it as classified as neither corrosive nor irritant, and states food-contact approval - which makes it the choice for kitchen worktops and work surfaces, where the concentrated version would be more than is needed.

The product forms no film and is colourless: the stone keeps its colour, its polish and its vapour permeability. It protects against water, oil, grease and weak acids - fruit juice, vinegar, spices.

Stone forgives less than concrete. An acidic cleaner used on marble or travertine will etch the surface irreversibly, and excess sealer on a polish leaves a smear that can no longer be removed.

  1. Match the cleaner to the stone. Marble, travertine and limestone are sensitive to acids - for those, neutral or alkaline products are the right ones.
  2. Remove waxes, polishes and polymer coatings. A penetrating sealer will not get through a layer of wax.
  3. Dry the stone all the way through and check that no moisture is being drawn up through the joints.
  4. On polished surfaces have a clean, soft cloth ready to lift the excess - you have minutes, not hours.
  5. Ventilate: the range for polished stone is solvent-based.

After sealing polished stone, manufacturers require the surface to stay out of use, usually for 72 hours. The exact figure is under "Technical data".

Before sealing the whole area, test on a patch hidden by a planter or in a corner of the patio. The same product can read differently on two batches of the same material, and on a surface with old coating left on it, it will not bond at all.

What is the difference between -1 and -2?

Chemistry and finish. The -1 versions are single-component, siloxane-based and dry colourless. The -2 versions also contain modified silanes and deepen the colour for a wet-stone effect. Protection against water is the job of the product in both cases; what separates them is the finish.

Can I use a granite sealer on marble?

Do not assume so. Marble is soft and sensitive to acids, granite is not - the manufacturer states the stone in the product's intended use, and our categories follow that. Every product lists its recommended substrates in the technical data.

How do I clean stone once it has been sealed?

Manufacturers of the polished-stone range state a permitted pH range for cleaning products - usually pH 5-9 for the invisible versions and wider for the wet-look ones. The figure for each product is under "Technical data".

Will sealing stop the stone yellowing?

It limits the ingress of water and the compounds dissolved in it, including those that discolour stone from below. It will not stop processes inside the stone itself, or rust from fixings.

Eco or the standard MG?

Eco where food contact matters and where working without solvents matters: kitchen worktops, tables, work surfaces. MG where graffiti protection is also needed and the surface has no contact with food.

Is it suitable for a granite kitchen worktop?

The manufacturer states food-contact approval, so that use is intended. Before starting, check the worktop has not been waxed - a sealer will not get through a layer of wax.

Will it protect marble against lemon juice?

The manufacturer lists weak acids: fruit juice, spices. That does not make it absolute resistance - spilled acid is not worth leaving on stone whether it is sealed or not.

The technical sheet and safety data sheet will be available after approval.

Prepare the surface first

An impregnation will not bond to a surface with anything left on it. This is the most common cause of complaints.
