Anti-slip treatment for granite and gneiss tiles R-9G CTS Chemistry

An anti-slip treatment for granite and gneiss tiles. 5-8 m² per litre; the manufacturer states the effect lasts 6 to 24 months. Applied at +10 to +25 °C, out of direct sun.

Surface

Natural stone

The surface the manufacturer intends this preparation for.

Natural stone

R-9G is the anti-slip treatment made for granite and gneiss tiles - stone that is harder and less receptive than ceramics, hence the different pH (3.5) and the higher coverage: 5-8 m² per litre.

The manufacturer states that the anti-slip effect lasts 6 to 24 months - as with the ceramic version, this is a periodic treatment.

The working conditions are narrower here: +10 to +25 °C, with the surface protected from direct sun and rain during application.

Stone forgives less than concrete. An acidic cleaner used on marble or travertine will etch the surface irreversibly, and excess sealer on a polish leaves a smear that can no longer be removed.

  1. Match the cleaner to the stone. Marble, travertine and limestone are sensitive to acids - for those, neutral or alkaline products are the right ones.
  2. Remove waxes, polishes and polymer coatings. A penetrating sealer will not get through a layer of wax.
  3. Dry the stone all the way through and check that no moisture is being drawn up through the joints.
  4. On polished surfaces have a clean, soft cloth ready to lift the excess - you have minutes, not hours.
  5. Ventilate: the range for polished stone is solvent-based.

After sealing polished stone, manufacturers require the surface to stay out of use, usually for 72 hours. The exact figure is under "Technical data".

Before sealing the whole area, test on a patch hidden by a planter or in a corner of the patio. The same product can read differently on two batches of the same material, and on a surface with old coating left on it, it will not bond at all.

What is the difference between -1 and -2?

Chemistry and finish. The -1 versions are single-component, siloxane-based and dry colourless. The -2 versions also contain modified silanes and deepen the colour for a wet-stone effect. Protection against water is the job of the product in both cases; what separates them is the finish.

Can I use a granite sealer on marble?

Do not assume so. Marble is soft and sensitive to acids, granite is not - the manufacturer states the stone in the product's intended use, and our categories follow that. Every product lists its recommended substrates in the technical data.

How do I clean stone once it has been sealed?

Manufacturers of the polished-stone range state a permitted pH range for cleaning products - usually pH 5-9 for the invisible versions and wider for the wet-look ones. The figure for each product is under "Technical data".

Will sealing stop the stone yellowing?

It limits the ingress of water and the compounds dissolved in it, including those that discolour stone from below. It will not stop processes inside the stone itself, or rust from fixings.

Will it work on polished granite?

The manufacturer states granite and gneiss tiles without distinguishing the surface finish. On a polish, any treatment that changes grip is worth checking with a test - a polish is the most sensitive of all to a change in appearance.

Can I use it instead of Guard Slip Resistant?

They are two different mechanisms. R-9G is acidic at pH 3.5 and works for a period of 6-24 months. Guard Slip Resistant reacts with the silica in the material and its maker describes the effect as long-lasting without giving a period. On stone sensitive to acids, the latter is the right one.
