Sandstone sealer, invisible finish HP-1 CTS Chemistry

Protects sandstone cladding, sills, walling and facade elements against water uptake without changing the colour or texture of the stone. A single-component, ready-to-use, water-based siloxane sealer that dries colourless.

HP-1 is an excellent sealer for sandstone - an exceptionally absorbent stone. Use it on sills, cladding, low walls and facade elements.

That absorbency is also sandstone's problem: water enters deeply, and with it salts that crystallise as they evaporate and break the stone apart from within. The product lowers water uptake while leaving water vapour a way out.

The colourless version - the stone keeps its own shade. A single-component siloxane product meeting PN-EN 1504-2 tab. 3, with a penetration depth above 5 mm.

Stone forgives less than concrete. An acidic cleaner used on marble or travertine will etch the surface irreversibly, and excess sealer on a polish leaves a smear that can no longer be removed.

  1. Match the cleaner to the stone. Marble, travertine and limestone are sensitive to acids - for those, neutral or alkaline products are the right ones.
  2. Remove waxes, polishes and polymer coatings. A penetrating sealer will not get through a layer of wax.
  3. Dry the stone all the way through and check that no moisture is being drawn up through the joints.
  4. On polished surfaces have a clean, soft cloth ready to lift the excess - you have minutes, not hours.
  5. Ventilate well when working with solvent-based products.

After sealing, polished stone usually stays out of use for 72 hours.

Before sealing the whole area, test on a patch hidden by a planter or in a corner of the patio. The same product can read differently on two batches of the same material, and on a surface with old coating left on it, it will not bond at all.

Can I use a granite sealer on marble?

Not always. Marble is soft and sensitive to acids, granite is not, so the product has to match the type of stone. Before you buy, check that marble is on the list of recommended substrates.

How do I clean stone once it has been sealed?

With cleaning products of the right pH. For the polished-stone range that is usually pH 5-9 for the invisible versions, and a wider range for the wet-look ones. You will find the range for your product in its technical data.

Will sealing stop the stone yellowing?

It helps, though not in every case. It limits the ingress of water and the compounds dissolved in it, including those that discolour stone from below. It will not stop processes inside the stone itself, or rust from fixings.

What separates the -1 from the -2?

Composition and finish. The -1 versions are single-component, based on siloxanes alone, and dry colourless. The -2 versions are multi-component - siloxanes with modified silanes - and give a lasting wet-look finish. Both meet PN-EN 1504-2 tab. 3 and both leave the pores open.

How much product do I need?

Consumption depends on the absorbency of the material, because the product is applied to saturation - so the surest way to work it out is to seal one square metre, see how much product it took, and multiply by your area, adding a margin.

When is the surface rain resistant?

After 5-6 hours. Until then, protect the freshly sealed surface from rain and from direct sun.

Sandstone or a sandstone wall - HP-1 or VP-1?

The chemistry is the same - what differs is the use each was tested for. For elements and cladding choose HP-1, for walls and facades VP-1.

How much will you need?

Apply to full saturation in one generous coat; on absorbent material, repeat the application wet-on-wet.
