The surface the manufacturer intends this preparation for.
SG-1 belongs to the range made for polished stone - material an ordinary siloxane sealer cannot seal, because there are no pores in it to fill.
The product is solvent-based, with high penetration, and is applied in one coat with a soft roller and then polished. Coverage is therefore far higher than in the range for absorbent stone: the manufacturer states about 20 m² per litre.
The colourless version: granite keeps its colour and its polish. After sealing, the manufacturer recommends maintaining the stone with products of pH 5-9.
Stone forgives less than concrete. An acidic cleaner used on marble or travertine will etch the surface irreversibly, and excess sealer on a polish leaves a smear that can no longer be removed.
After sealing polished stone, manufacturers require the surface to stay out of use, usually for 72 hours. The exact figure is under "Technical data".
Before sealing the whole area, test on a patch hidden by a planter or in a corner of the patio. The same product can read differently on two batches of the same material, and on a surface with old coating left on it, it will not bond at all.
Chemistry and finish. The -1 versions are single-component, siloxane-based and dry colourless. The -2 versions also contain modified silanes and deepen the colour for a wet-stone effect. Protection against water is the job of the product in both cases; what separates them is the finish.
Do not assume so. Marble is soft and sensitive to acids, granite is not - the manufacturer states the stone in the product's intended use, and our categories follow that. Every product lists its recommended substrates in the technical data.
Manufacturers of the polished-stone range state a permitted pH range for cleaning products - usually pH 5-9 for the invisible versions and wider for the wet-look ones. The figure for each product is under "Technical data".
It limits the ingress of water and the compounds dissolved in it, including those that discolour stone from below. It will not stop processes inside the stone itself, or rust from fixings.
The product bonds with the stone slowly, and during that time the surface takes marks easily. The manufacturer also warns that after eight hours marks from shoes, knee pads or uneven polishing can no longer be removed.
Yes. This is a solvent-based product and the manufacturer requires good ventilation during application and for 72 hours afterwards.
SG-1 does not change the look of the stone. SG-2 deepens its colour for a wet-stone effect, and allows a wider range of cleaning products - pH 3-12 instead of 5-9.
That is the typical use for polished granite. Note the requirement for 72 hours of ventilation - awkward in a kitchen; the solvent-free alternative is ProtectGuard MG Eco, which carries food-contact approval.
