Solvent-based sealer for concrete and floors EH-18 EKSIL

A silane-siloxane resin in an organic solvent for concrete and floors. It does not add gloss and does not change the colour - the manufacturer notes only a possible slight darkening and matting. Touch dry in 2-3 hours, fully cured after a day.

Concrete and floors

EH-18 is a silane-siloxane resin in an organic solvent, intended for concrete and floors, including surfaces under traffic.

The manufacturer is unusually frank about appearance here: the product adds no gloss, may darken the surface slightly and may matt it subtly. If you are expecting a wet-look concrete finish, the right product is a different one.

Coverage 4-7 m² per litre, touch dry in 2-3 hours, fully cured after a day. On porous surfaces the manufacturer advises a second coat. Packs of 5 l and 30 l.

Concrete accepts a sealer only when it is dry, clean and seasoned. A fresh slab is still giving off mix water and will push any coating off with it.

  1. Remove cement laitance and mortar residue - left under the sealer, they come away with it.
  2. Degrease the surface. Oil stains need an alkaline cleaner, not a detergent.
  3. Primed or painted floors need the old coating removed; a penetrating sealer will not bond through paint.
  4. Check the moisture in the substrate. Some solvent-based products require below 5-6 % - the figure is in the technical data.
  5. Ventilate the room if you are working with a solvent-based product indoors.

A new floor and fresh precast units have to season. Manufacturers give that period on the data sheet; for precast concrete it is usually around 28 days.

Before sealing the whole area, test on a patch hidden by a planter or in a corner of the patio. The same product can read differently on two batches of the same material, and on a surface with old coating left on it, it will not bond at all.

Will a sealer stop my floor dusting?

Products that form a polymer layer bind the loose particles on the surface, and manufacturers describe them as dust-free. That is not a substitute for a hardener where the concrete itself is dusting because it was poorly floated - the problem is then in the slab, not on it.

Can I seal concrete indoors?

Yes, if the technical data lists indoor use. With solvent-based products you have to ventilate during application and for the period the manufacturer states.

What do I do about old oil stains?

Remove them before sealing, with an oil stain remover. A sealer applied over a stain seals it in and fixes it - oil will not evaporate through a sealed layer.

Does a sealer protect against road salt?

It limits the ingress of water and the salts dissolved in it. How far that goes depends on the product, and we quote it from the manufacturer's data sheet rather than generalising.

Will it change the colour of the floor?

The manufacturer states that it does not change the colour, while noting a possible slight darkening and subtle matting. On pale concrete this is worth checking with a test patch, because the difference can show at the join between sealed and unsealed areas.

When can I walk on the floor?

The manufacturer gives touch dry after 2-3 hours and full cure after 24 hours, and advises limiting use of the surface until it has cured.

The technical sheet and safety data sheet will be available after approval.
