Acidic floor cleaner for frequent use C-2 CTS Chemistry

An acidic concentrate for floors where scale and mineral deposits build up. pH of the concentrate approx. 2, of the working solution 3-4 - not for surfaces that are not acid resistant.

Concrete and floors

C-2 is the acidic counterpart of C-12: the same dilution scheme and the same purpose - frequent washing of floors - but the opposite pH. Concentrate approx. 2.0, working solution 3-4.

You reach for it where scale, mineral deposits and hard-water residue settle on the floor - not grease. For organic soiling the right product is the alkaline C-12.

The acidic pH rules out surfaces that are not acid resistant - marble, travertine and limestone in particular. A test in an inconspicuous place is obligatory.

Concrete accepts a sealer only when it is dry, clean and seasoned. A fresh slab is still giving off mix water and will push any coating off with it.

  1. Remove cement laitance and mortar residue - left under the sealer, they come away with it.
  2. Degrease the surface. Oil stains need an alkaline cleaner, not a detergent.
  3. Primed or painted floors need the old coating removed; a penetrating sealer will not bond through paint.
  4. Check the moisture in the substrate. Some solvent-based products require below 5-6 % - the figure is in the technical data.
  5. Ventilate the room if you are working with a solvent-based product indoors.

A new floor and fresh precast units have to season. Manufacturers give that period on the data sheet; for precast concrete it is usually around 28 days.

Before sealing the whole area, test on a patch hidden by a planter or in a corner of the patio. The same product can read differently on two batches of the same material, and on a surface with old coating left on it, it will not bond at all.

Will a sealer stop my floor dusting?

Products that form a polymer layer bind the loose particles on the surface, and manufacturers describe them as dust-free. That is not a substitute for a hardener where the concrete itself is dusting because it was poorly floated - the problem is then in the slab, not on it.

Can I seal concrete indoors?

Yes, if the technical data lists indoor use. With solvent-based products you have to ventilate during application and for the period the manufacturer states.

What do I do about old oil stains?

Remove them before sealing, with an oil stain remover. A sealer applied over a stain seals it in and fixes it - oil will not evaporate through a sealed layer.

Does a sealer protect against road salt?

It limits the ingress of water and the salts dissolved in it. How far that goes depends on the product, and we quote it from the manufacturer's data sheet rather than generalising.

How do I turn a dilution ratio into a quantity?

A 1:4 dilution means one part product to four parts water - a litre of concentrate gives five litres of working solution. Where the ratio is given in ml per litre of water (the C range), work the other way: 50 ml per litre means 20 litres of solution from one litre of concentrate.

Can I use it on a marble floor?

No. Marble, travertine and limestone are sensitive to acids - a product at pH 2 will etch the surface. For sensitive stone, use products of neutral or slightly alkaline pH.

The technical sheet and safety data sheet will be available after approval.
